Prof. Atta-ur-Rahman obtained his Ph.D. in organic chemistry from Cambridge University (1968). He has 984 publications in several fields of organic chemistry including 723 research publications, 37 international patents, 156 books and 68 chapters in books published largely by major U.S. and European presses. He is the Editor-in-Chief of 9 European Chemistry journals and the Editor of the world’s leading encyclopedic series of volumes “Studies in Natural Product Chemistry” 46 volumes of which have been published under his Editorship during last two He is also Editor-in-Chief of several European Chemistry journals including Current Medicinal Chemistry and Current Organic Chemistry. Eighty one students have completed their Ph.D. degrees under his supervision.
Prof. Rahman is the first scientist from the Muslim world to have won the prestigious UNESCO Science Prize (1999) in the 35 year old history of the Prize. He was elected as Fellow of Royal Society (London) in July 2006. He has been conferred honorary doctorate degrees by many universities including the degree of Doctor of Science (Sc.D.) by the Cambridge University (UK) (1987), Honorary degree of Doctor of Education by Coventry University UK (2007), Honorary D.Sc. degree by Bradford University (2010), Honorary Ph.D. by Asian Institute of Technology (2010) and Honorary Doctorate from King of Malaysia (University of Technology, Mara, 2011). He was elected Honorary Life Fellow of Kings College, Cambridge University, UK in 2007. Prof. Atta-ur-Rahman was conferred the World Academy of Science (TWAS) Prize for Institution Building in October 2009 in recognition of his contributions for bringing about revolutionary changes in the higher education sector in Pakistan. Prof. Rahman is the most decorated scientist in Pakistan. The Austrian government has honoured him with its highest civil award (“Grosse Goldene Ehrenzeischen am Bande” in 2007) in recognition of his eminent contributions. He has been conferred four civil awards, including Tamgha-i-Imtiaz (1983), Sitara-i-Imtiaz (1991), Hilal-i-Imtiaz (1998), and the highest national civil award Nishan-i-Imtiaz (2002). He is President of Network of Academies of Sciences of Islamic Countries (NASIC), Foreign Fellow of Korean Academy of Sciences, and Foreign Fellow of the Chinese Chemical Society. Prof. Atta-ur-Rahman has won the International Scientific Corporation Award by Chinese Academy of Science (CAS) for building scientific collaborations between China and Pakistan (2014), has been awarded prestigious “Einstein Professorship” by Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), 2013 and has been awarded highest award “Friendship Award of China” on September 28, 2014.
Prof. Atta-ur-Rahman is the President of Network of Academies of Science in Countries of the Organization of Islamic Conference (NASIC). Prof. Atta-ur-Rahman has been elected as the president of the Pakistan Academy of Sciences twice from 2003-2006 and 2011 – 2014. He was the Federal Minister for Science and Technology (14th March, 2000 – 20th November, 2002), Federal Minister of Education (2002) and Chairman of the Higher Education Commission with the status of a Federal Minister from 2002-2008. Prof. Atta-ur-Rahman was the Coordinator General of COMSTECH, an OIC Ministerial Committee comprising the 57 Ministers of Science & Technology from 57 OIC member countries from 1996 to 2012. He is Distinguished National Professor as well as Professor Emeritus at Karachi University.
In recognition of his global outstanding services to the development of Science and Technology the largest university in Malaysia, University of Technology Mara, Malaysia UiTM, has established an institution called entitled, “Atta-ur-Rahman Institute of Natural Product Discovery (RiND)” in 2013., The National University of Science and Technology (NUST) has also established the “Atta-ur-Rahman School of Applied Biosciences (ASAB)” at their university in Islamabad in 2011. In recognition of his services, the University of Karachi has named The Third World Center for Science and Technology building after him. It is now called, “Prof. Atta-ur-Rahman Laboratories” in 2011.
Prof. K.M. Nalin de Silva

Prof. K.M. Nalin de silva is a Professor in Chemistry at the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka. He obtained his B.Sc.(Chemistry, First Class, 1992) from the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka and Ph.D. (1997) from the University of Cambridge, UK. He has gained postdoctoral experience from University of Cambridge(1998) and Louisiana State University, USA (2005 – 2007). He has active collaborations with Centre for Advanced Microstructures and Devices (CAMD) of Louisiana State University and Department of Chemistry, University of Massachusetts, Lowell, USA. He was also a Research and Development Consultant (2010) for Haycarb PL, Sri Lanka. Presently he is working as a Science Team Leader in Sri Lanka Institute of Nanotechnology, Sri Lanka. He was the Director of Career Guidance Unit (2002 – 2005) of University of Colombo. He won the Presidential Research Award for four consecutive years and a National Research Award presented by National Science Foundation (NSF), Sri Lanka. He was also named ‘Young Scientist of the Year’ in 2004 by the Third World Academy of Science (TWAS) and NSF. He is member of the National Nanotechnology Committee at NSF for drafting the National Nanotechnology Policy of Sri Lanka and a member of the subcommittee under the National Committee for Popularization of Science, to popularize Nanotechnology in Sri Lanka. He is the recipient of Professor P.P.G.L Siriwardena Gold Medal Oration Award and Devanathan Memorial Award for research. He was also a Visiting Professor at Sultan Qaboos University, Sultanate of Oman.
Prof. Wei Zhang

Professor Wei Zhang, a Biochemical Engineer since 1989, is an expert in bioprocess engineering, marine bioproducts engineering, and industrial and pharmaceutical biotechnology including, marine bioprocessing, molecular and integrated bioprocessing, microalgal biofuels and biorefinery, bioproduct discovery and development, membrane bioreactor, fermentation, plant and animal cell culture. He obtained his PhD from Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1994, and did postdoctoral fellowships in the University of Tokyo, Adelaide University and Cambridge University, joining Flinders University in 1998. Since 2000, he has secured many national and international grants of over A$20 million for 40 research projects, including large microalgae biorefinery projects focused on biofuels and high-efficiency bioprocessing technologies, and also projects on macroalgae biorefinery and bioproducts. He has over 270 refereed publications and conference proceedings, 25 patents, and is an editorial member of three International Journals- Biotechnology Letters, Process Biochemistry, and Biofuels, and editor-in-chief of Springer Book Series “Advances in Marine Bioprocesses and Bioproducts”. He has organized and co-organized over 20 international conferences, including co-chairing the 13th International Biotechnology Symposium, with over 2500 participants from 80 countries in 2008, and chairing the 8th Asia-Pacific Algal Biotechnology Conference
in 2012. In 2008 he won the “South Australia Young Tall Poppy Science Award”. Since 2009, he became the founding Director of the Flinders Centre for Marine Bioproducts Development. He is the inaugural President of Australia-New Zealand Marine Biotechnology society.

Professor B.G.D. Nissanka de Silva is attached to the Department of Zoology, University of Sri Jayewardenepura. He obtained his Ph.D in Molecular Entomology in 1995 which was the first Ph.D in this discipline produced in the country. His research includes development of molecular assays for the identification of malaria vectors and sand flies, population genetic structure analysis of malaria vectors, Dengue vectors, and sand flies. He has more than 75 research paper articles and communications published in peer reviewed local and International Journals. He is a former Board member of the NIFNI (Sagara University), and National Science Foundation. He is now serving as a member of university council, University of Sri Jayewardenepura.
